Mary is a 35 year old lady. Her husband noticed a changing dark spot on her neck. At the time, she was pregnant with her second child and too busy to seek medical advice. However after her father, also raised his concerns, she was prompted to seek medical advice from a dermatologist. The lesion was indeed a melanoma, but fortunately it was caught early and cured by relatively minor surgery.

Tracey was a 44 year old school teacher, with 3 young children. She became aware of a new brown spot on her calf. She asked her GP about it and Mary was referred to the dermatologist. Mary put off the appointment for another 6 months.
Eventually she was prompted to make the phone call to the specialist when she noticed a dark raised area appear within the spot. The lesion was a melanoma.
This one was more advanced than Mary’s, and therefore had the potential to spread. It was treated with surgery and currently she remains well.
